Costa Rica Photography Workshop, 2012 - Page 1

April 27 - May 7, 2012

We returned once again to the beautiful country of Costa Rica, visiting several unique locations.  Our first destination was Tortuguero, on the Caribbean coast, with a fascinating stop at a Banana Plantation en route.  We once again enjoyed wonderful boat rides on the canals of the Tortuguero National Park, seeing many bird species, monkeys, iguanas, mangrove swamps, etc.  After a few days there, we headed out to the world-famous Rancho Naturalista, my first time there.  I was not disappointed!  The beauty and variety of the birds and wildlife was all that I had hoped for.  This included a first-time encounter with several Sunbitterns, who displayed their amazing wing coloration while in flight.  After our time there, we drove to the Pacific Coast, where we enjoyed a very productive boat trip on the Tarcoles River, one of my favorite activities while in Costa Rica.  We also did day-trips to Manuel Antonio to the south, where we enjoyed some "R&R" time on the beautiful beach there, and another to the Solimar Ranch to the north, with a boat ride on the Bebedero River nearby.  A stop at the La Paz Waterfall Garden while traveling back to San Jose was also productive, with many hummingbird species being seen and photographed.

I continue to be amazed that even though this was my 9th visit to Costa Rica, I always see so many species that I hadn't encountered on prior trips.  The diversity is just spectacular.  I have included 3 sets of images here, and hope you enjoy them.  I continue to use a GPS recorder to identify where all of my photos were taken, and for those of you who have Google Earth installed on your computers, you can double-click on the following links, and they will show where all of the photos in these galleries were taken:  Gallery 1, Gallery 2, Gallery 3.

Finally, this was my first trip shooting with my newly acquired Canon 1D Mark IV.  I have been using the Mark II version of this camera since 2004, and decided that it was time to upgrade.  It has required some adjustment, in terms of shooting settings and technique, as well as in post-processing the Raw files, but it has been a joy to use.  In case anybody is interested, I'm actually selling my prior Canon 1D Mark II - email me if you want further information about this.
