We saw quite a few Galapagos Hawks during our time in the Galapagos. Much of the time they were soaring off in the distance, but we had several close-up encounters as well. Two of the three times this happened, the light was very unfavorable (either severe backlighting, or in deep forest shadow), but this time they were reasonably open with decent light. When we first spotted them, they were quite a distance away, and the sun was behind them. I gradually made my way toward them, climbed on the rocks to get between them and the sun, and was finally able to get some decent shots. You can see the banding on the hawk's legs - there is quite a bit of scientific research going on, involving many, many species.
