Macro

Red Ant

A common, but small red ant. Up close the body becomes almost translucent. In almost perpetual motion, another tough bug to photograph. The eyes have a "painted on" apperance. I have one other shot that shows this even better, at higher magnification, but the focus was off a little, and I was reluctant to include it. This shot was taken at f/16 using the set-up described on the Macro Gallery Home Page.

Thanks to Alex Wild of the Univ. of California at Davis, this has been identified as Formica pallidefulva, one of the more 'charismatic' ant species.
