An all-black species of Oystercatcher, I saw and shot a number of these at Kaikoura, but preferred the image above which was taken much later in the trip, on Ulva Island. We stayed a couple of days on Stuart Island, way down south, and spent a few hours hiking around Ulva Island, coming across a number of birds at the beach area of the island.
