Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks - 2007

While my wife and I have been doing a fair amount of traveling, exploring various parts of the world, we have long felt that we've been neglecting some of the fantastic destinations within the U.S. We greatly enjoyed our first major trip out West about 6 years ago, when we visited Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon and other nearby locations, and wanted to see more of this part of the country. We started planning almost a year ago (well actually, my wife did most of the planning!), and were finally able to spend a little over 2 weeks out there in the middle of June. The images in the 3 galleries I present here represent a small fraction of all that we saw and did, organized by their subject, rather than location.

We flew in to Jackson, WY, rented a car, and headed to Grand Teton, staying at the Jackson Lake Lodge. Some of our favorite locations included Oxbow Bend, Schwabacher's Landing, Mormon Row, and the Jenny Lake area. We enjoyed a different view of this magnificent park when we did a float trip down the Snake River. After exploring Grand Teton for several days, we went to Yellowstone, staying a few days at the Lake Yellowstone Lodge on the eastern side of the park, and then several more days at Snow Lodge, on the western side, near Old Faithful. We enjoyed seeking out the wildlife, including several bear encounters, as well as exploring the unique geothermal oddities this park has to offer. The LaMar Valley was fantastic, and we had an awesome time driving the Beartooth Highway, getting as far as the West Summit at 10,947 feet.

Glacier National Park was our next destination, where we spend a few nights at The Resort at Glacier at St. Mary's, followed by some time at the Lake McDonald Lodge. The landscape here was quite impressive, although we were disappointed to find that the middle section of the Road to the Sun was closed because of damage to the highway , apparently from mudslides or other natural events. We did one of the boat rides from Many Glacier, with an included hike providing wonderful views of Grinnell Lake and surrounding areas. We definitely got some exercise on this hike! We also headed up to Waterton Park in Canada for a day, which was well worth the time.

While we were very lucky in terms of finding great things to shoot, we were less fortunate as far as getting good light for these shots. There was virtually no rain for the entire 2+ weeks, but frequent cloud cover at the prime dawn and dusk times was disappointing. Plus, given the area we had to cover, and the limited number of sunrises and sunsets, we often had to shoot at less than ideal times of day. The result is that the quality of many images posted here is less than I had hoped for, but I posted them anyway, in order to convey some sense of the beauty and diversity of these fantastic National Parks.

For those interested in GPS and have Google Earth installed on their computers, I again created KMZ files, showing the location for all the images presented in these galleries: Birds, Wildlife, Landscape.
