Marco, our guide, got incredibly excited when he spotted this as we were just driving down the road (going from the Arenal Observatory Lodge to the Arenal Hanging Gardens). It turns out that this is a very rare bird to see during the day, as they are primarily nocturnal. Not surprisingly, then, he never opened his eyes. And given its coloration, and position at the top of a very tall and similarly colored tree trunk, I am still amazed that he saw it. We all got out and shot it for close to an hour, and were fortunate to have some blue sky behind it at times.
