On May 10, 2008, I traveled down to Lake Marion, SC, and spent the day shooting with Doug Gardner, Don and Joanne Wuori, and Tom Winston. Doug was leading the group, and I previously enjoyed spending time with him at Lake Mattamuskeet a few years ago. He is a talented, full-time photographer, whose current projects include a TV series called Wild Photo Adventures. His other website can be found here. He lives in Manning, SC, not too far from Lake Marion, and he let me know that water levels were good this year for shooting Osprey. I had great luck shooting Osprey when they were just starting their nesting on Blue Cypress Lake in Florida, March 2006, but no chicks were present. Doug indicated that we would definitely have opportunity to see and shoot some chicks, so I jumped at the chance to join him down there. We worked from his pontoon boat, had a great time, and saw and shot a number of other species besides the Osprey.

I recently replaced the ailing Delorme GPS receiver I had previously been using, and this was my first chance to try it out in the field. I bought the QStarz BT Q1000 Platinum, and was very pleased with its performance. I use this to geocode my photos, providing excellent documentation on where my shots were taken. I use a program called Robogeo, which matches the time/date stamp in the GPS log with that in the EXIF data of the images, to geocode the images, and can also add the latitude/longitude coordinates into the EXIF data as well. Works very well! It also allows you to create Google Earth files that will show thumbnails of the images, and exactly where they were taken. I generated one for this trip, so if you have Google Earth installed on your computer, it can be downloaded and viewed using this link.
