Costa Rica - December, 2005 - Part 3

Our original itinerary called for a couple-hour walk on the lava fields at Arenal on the last morning we were there. This was rained out, basically the only time rain interfered with our plans. We therefore got an early start on the somewhat long drive to Jaco Beach, on the Pacific coast. This worked out quite fortuitously, as we arrived early enough to go looking for some Scarlet Macaws. We went to a beautiful beach area, with mostly clear skies, and the sun slowly going down on the ocean behind us. We found a number of Scarlet Macaws in trees along the beach, affording some very good photo opportunities. Seeing and photographing these gorgeous birds in this setting was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We went back the next afternoon, to try and repeat this experience, but the macaws were nowhere to be found!

The next morning we spent a few hours hiking at Carara National Park. We saw some toucans and other wildlife, but the shooting conditions and distances involved made it very tough to get any decent shots. We did see a Boat-billed Heron and some crocodiles at a lagoon about a mile or so into the park. The next day we headed toward San Jose, but spent several hours at the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This was a very worthwhile stop, as there were ample hummingbirds, butterflies, amphibians and reptiles to see (albeit in somewhat captive conditions), as well as the pretty impressive series of waterfalls. We then spent one last night in Costa Rica, at the very beautiful Orquideas Inn. The grounds here were quite beautiful, and we even found a Blue-crowned Mot Mot to photograph in the morning before we were taken to the airport.

New Feature: this is the first time I fully tested out and used a GPS set-up, to pinpoint where my images were taken. I will be addressing the details and specifics of how I accomplished this in the future, but for now, you can access this information using Google Earth. This is a fascinating tool available from Google, displaying satellite imagery of the entire planet. You can get information about this application here, and it can be downloaded here. Once installed you can then open and view the KMZ file I created, which shows where my images were taken, including a thumbnail of the photo itself, and a link to the full-sized image on my website. This file can be accessed by clicking here. Please email me if you have any inquiries or difficulties.
